Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Grace Lintern in Somerset in 1824 and married Albert Rich Loxton in 1846.
Albert was born in Somerset in 1821 'on the wrong side of the blanket' to Miss Anne Loxton. We have not yet traced his father though family stories and some certificates tell of a "close" link to the Rich family and that might account for the inclusion of "Rich" as Albert's second name. It is known that Albert was baptised and raised as a Loxton.
They married at the North Wooton Church, 29 June 1846. North Wooton is only around 10 miles down the road from Wells where many of the Loxton family resided. They emigrated from the UK in 1849 in the barque "Elgin" and they travelled with their sons, Alfred, 2 years (1846 - 1923) and William Charles, 1 year (1848 - 1938). The "Elgin" left from Liverpool on 17 May then finally left Plymouth on 31st of May 1849 and carried 6 married couples with children as well as 204 single Irish girls aged from mostly from 14 to 19. They arrived at the McLaren Wharf in Port Adelaide on 10th September 1849. The McLaren Wharf had only been completed a few weeks before their arrival but port conditions were still very basic. Many ships still anchored in the Port River and transferred their passengers and cargo in rowboats. The road to Adelaide was worse than a track and it often took families 12 hours to travel the few miles into the city. A spring cart would make the journey for 20 shillings a head, a bullock dray was an alternative at 5 shillings a head but the dray was only marginally better than walking. Very soon after arrival, 10 March 1850, Eliza Ann was born. At the time of the registration of the birth they were shown as living in Norwood, a suburb of Adelaide. Albert & Elizabeth first lived with her Uncle Anthony at Arkaroola in the Flinders Ranges. Today's Flinders looks very much like they would have seen in those days. On 3 April 1852 Sarah Loxton was born. The next child was Glender Rich born 31 December 1854. By the time that their 6th child, James, was born (3 December 1856) they had moved down to Tungkillo in the hills near Adelaide. This next image is of the Lease that Albert took out on their property. Albert and Eliza prospered in the rural district and more children followed: Charlotte in 1857, Eliza in 1860, Emma in 1862, Fannie in 1865, Susan in 1866 and there are records of a 13th child, Ellen louisa, but the date has not yet been found. Albert passed away on 28 April 1897, aged 75, and Elizabeth eventually followed him on 17 January 1900, aged 76. They were both buried in Tungkillo cemetary. Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel and Frances Lintern. Samuel Lintern was born in 1806 in England. He married Frances. Frances was born in 1806 in England. Samuel & Frances sailed on the Sultana with their two daughters, Charlotte, 14 and Anne 6. Samuel was allotted a parcel of land at Tungkillo in 1855. Frances died in November 1872, Samuel died in January 1881, and they both are buried in Tungkillo cemetary, South Australia. |
